2020 Jeep Wrangler Two Door

RULE ALL ROUTES

The classic Jeep, which was made in massive numbers during World War II, carries on, but with new and different models. In 2018 a revised JK model was introduced. A four door model is available, and very recently, a pick-up truck version called the Gladiator was recently unveiled. But least you forget, there is the classic 2-door configuration which was our test SUV.

Along with all of these models, there are also multiple power choices available. A 3.6-liter V-6 producing 285 horsepower is the standard power source. It comes with an optional 8-speed automatic transmission, but for those who wish real gear control, a 6-speed stick is the base unit. Interestingly, the smaller turbocharged 4-cylinder with 270 horsepower is optional, but with the 8 speed automatic transmission only. It is a mild hybrid meaning there is a little electric motor to help when needed. Later, a 3.0-liter diesel with 260 horsepower will be added to the equation. And keeping with tradition, the suspension has two solid axles to handle off road action, and 4-wheel drive is standard equipment. With the use of a lever by the driver, power can go from 2-wheel drive high to 4-wheel drive high to 4-wheel drive low to deal different terrains.

There is no mistaking the Wrangler for some other vehicle. The Wrangler’s flat rectangular windshield, the long narrow vents in the grill, the simple round single headlights, fenders that protrude out over the wheel wells and a spare tire on the rear lift gate make it unmistakable.

Clearly, however, the interior of our base two-door test vehicle was a mix of old and new. The door were opened and locked with a key, had cranks to open the windows, and the outside mirrors must be set by hand. Without power options on the doors it makes the doors easier to remove. Obviously, more expensive sub models have passive entry and power door locks, windows, and mirrors. On the modern side, a small colorful touch video screen with a reverse view camera is part of the deal. Likewise another screen in the dash pod which provides fuel economy data, radio station info, etc. Handles behind the steering wheels can change sound levels and radio channel choices. Likewise, a simple start button begins the motor action. This Jeep can be had with a canvas top and sides, the windshield can be lowered, and the doors can be removed. In our test model two fiberglass roof panels over the driver and front passenger can be taken off for open-air fun.

The rear quarters can handle two people. Depending on the passenger’s size, the front seats may have to be moved forward, but tall passengers are easily accommodated because of the high roofline. Two air vents are mounted on the back of the center console. Storage pouches are on the back of the front seats. Cup holders are on the middle of the floor.

The spare tire is mounted on the rear gate assembly, but getting into the rear storage area is not difficult. Pull a handle and the lower portion swings out of the way, and then simply pull up the rear window. With the rear seat upright rear storage is a little tight, but the rear seat is easily flipped forward presenting a large storage area

On the road, the overall height of this Jeep is very noticeable. It is simply higher than cars and many SUVs. Our test SUV turbo four cylinder with the 8-speed automatic transmission presents a good mix of the performance (0-60: 6.3) and decent fuel mileage (24 mpg average). Engine noise is low at idle and gradual acceleration. To save fuel at stoplights, the engine turns off and restarts with forward movement, and this system has been improved and is not noticeable. The ride on the paved roads is tight and controlled, but not super rough. With big off road type tires cornering is controlled without leaning. The transmission shifts are not felt most of the time, and can be manually shifted by moving the lever to the left.

For traditionalists, the two-door Jeep Wrangler look goes way back to its beginning. But some traditions do not need to be continued and with a powerful fuel-efficient engine this Jeep plays both worlds well.
