OAHU

RACE TRACK STATUS ON OAHU

Oahu is the only major Hawaiian island without a race track. Hawaii Raceway Park, which was a track providing almost all forms of racing (drag strip, road racing for cars and motorcycles, motorcycle dirt track, go cart track, drifting, etc.), closed 13 years ago. There is a big push to open a new track on a portion of 500 acres of land at old Barbers Point to be given to the City and County of Honolulu by the Navy. Thanks to efforts of State Representative Sam Kong and his team and Honolulu Councilwoman Ann Kobayashi, the Honolulu Council’s Park and Recreational committee passed Resolution 18-265 urging the City administration to finalize the title transfer and use 220 acres of the property for a race track. On December 5th the full City Council approved the resolution with a vote of 8-0 (One excused). If you support this effort email Parks@honolulu. gov indicating your position on this issue. Recently, State Representative Chris Lee (Kailua) has submitted another resolution to support the track with Parks and Recreation. For info go to: https://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/measure_indiv.aspx?billtype=HCR&billnumber=132&year=2020. In another effort to open a track on Oahu, Mike Kitchens, the auto writer for SP (Street Pulse) newspaper, has announced his proposal to build a track at Campbell Industrial Park near where the old Hawaii Raceway Park was. The proposed track is in progress with building a multi-venue motorsports complex, Circuit Hawaii. This will provide racing, entertainment, education, training, and youth mentoring, adding significant economic stimulus across multiple industries. Circuit Hawaii will be an FIA Grade 3 Motorsports Facility that will support local, national, international amateur and professional racing. It is intending to host national and international series alongside community based events of many different types to include both automotive and non-automotive events. In addition, Circuit Hawaii features the Hawaii Drivers Club (HDC). The HDC is a membership based offering, enabling car and track enthusiasts the opportunity to become part of a unique club. Circuit Hawaii is targeting to be an affordable facility for our local community. For info go to buildthetrack/@circuithawaii
