The midsize Murano SUV is in its third generation. And literally the Murano is the middle of the Nissan SUV pack between the smaller Kicks, Rogue Sport, Rogue and the bigger three row of seats found in the Pathfinder and the Armada. Recently, the Murano was refreshed with a redo of the front area and a redesign of the headlights.
Unlike many SUVs, the Murano sets itself apart with the side windows narrowing as they go back to the liftgate. At the same time, the body sides have interesting sculpturing accents running both high and low. A large spoiler is above the rear window, and big dual exhaust pipes are integrated into the rear bumper. Large 18-inch alloy wheels are part of the package. All in all, it is an entertaining look.
On the power front, a 3.5-liter V-6 is the sole source of thrust, and it develops 260 horsepower. Like many Nissans, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) handles the power thru either the front wheels or the optional all wheel drive unit. On our front wheel drive model, the 0-60 time is more than a satisfactory 7.3 seconds. Likewise, the average fuel mileage rating is a reasonable 23mpg. Pricing starts at about $32,000.
As with many these days, having possession of the key lets you in by merely pulling the door handle and tapping the start button to get on the road. A large colorful eight-inch touch screen in the center of the dash handles multiple functions including, of course, a helpful reverse camera. Smart phone apps can also be tied into the screen. A number of additional buttons and dials surround the screen to help with various functions. An easy to use dual automatic climate system handles cooling needs. In the dashpod, another video is found between the speedometer and tachometer, which provides data with a push of the buttons on the steering wheel (fuel mileage, distances, average speed, etc.). The front seats are quite comfortable with some interesting patterns. A leather covered steering wheel adds to the interior layout.
In the rear quarters, there is plenty of room for three passengers. The floor is essentially flat which helps with foot room. The air vents are found in back of the center console, and an armrest is provided with two cup holders. Under the back hatch, the storage is quite large. And with just a pull of a strap, the 60/40 rear seat backs are easily dropped to create a much larger storage area for bulky items.
On the road, the powerful V-6 operates quietly even when pressed. And with the shiftless continually variable transmission, there are no gear changes. But for those who insist on control of the gears, the gear lever can be moved over and can create “shifts”. Even with its height, handling the corners is controlled and easy. Rough pavement is felt, but not in a distressing manner. Multiple safety features are standard equipment including front collision warnings, blind spot warning, and rear cross traffic alert. In case of an accident, there are 10 airbags and curtains provided for additional protection.
With this round of the Murano, Nissan has provided a handy family mover with many safety issues covered. And the powertrain combo of a V-6 and CVT provides power with reasonable fuel mileage.
