2020 Mercedes benz GL350

BY ED KEMPER

Among the Mercedes SUVs, the GL model is in the middle of the size pack. With the 2020 version, Mercedes has made major changes both inside and outside. Like many Mercedes models, a number of powerplants are offered. The base engine is a 2.0 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder, pumping out 255 hp. Next up to bat is a new 3.0 liter turbocharged 6 cylinder generating 362 hp. And for those who want even more power, there is a biturbo 4.0-liter V-8 which generates 483 ponies. A 9-speed transmission directs the power to the rear wheels or the optional all wheel drive system.

The restyled exterior is based on a bigger overall body, which is longer, wider, and has a longer wheelbase and track width. The prominent and classic Mercedes grille is pressed further out with heavier chrome pieces surrounding the classic Mercedes star in the center. Free standing roof rails have been added along with a large spoiler and two part taillights. Added are larger alloy wheels from 19 inches on up. The end result is clearly Mercedes with a stouter look.

The most present shocking change is perhaps in the interior redesign. Of course, leather and wood are spread around and that is to be expected. But what is different are the 2 super large 12.3 video screens spread across the dash. With multiple controls on the steering wheel and a pad on the center console, the look of the dash pod can be changed to your liking. With many cameras at various locations, the center screen can give the driver views from 360 degrees, to panoramic, to front or back of the vehicle. Many other activities or features can be controlled by voice commands by simply saying “Mercedes” and giving the command for action.

Rear room is very reasonable. The rear occupants have their own sunroof, a drop down armrest, and air vents on the pillars. The rear seat backs are split 40/20/40 and can be dropped for carrying large items. Optional is a third row of two seats. A large storage area is found under the powered liftgate which can be opened with button on the driver’s door. A removable cover is available to hide items from outside views. A button on the liftgate can be punched to close it.

Even with the smallest powerplant, acceleration is good with a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. Power and handling can be varied with a spin of a dial from econ, comfort, sport or individual. And the nine speed gearbox goes through the gears effortlessly, but can be shifted manually with paddles behind the wheels. With the big 21-inch optional alloy wheels, road control and cornering is very good. An auto stop feature can be activated so the driver does not have to have a foot on brake pedal at lights. Generally, the interior is quiet at all times.

So with this major do over, Mercedes has created an SUV that is attractive with a practical luxury spin.
